Three tributaries near Union Valley Reservoir in the El Dorado National Forest were chosen to
be monitored. One creek was impacted by recreational usage, one was logged, and another was remote
and considered pristine. The task of WES participants is to monitor physical and biological
parameters of these creeks. The El Dorado NF uses the collected data in the El Dorado National
Forest stream survey database. This experience provides an opportunity for students to learn
watershed monitoring techniques, and be exposed to natural resource career choices. Students
are asked to apply their practical classroom learning in real world challenges, which significantly
reinforced their learning experiences. Teachers are also rewarded by working alongside a Forest
Service hydrologist, fish biologist, wildlife biologist, and forester, as well as teachers from other
schools and speacialists from other agencies.
